It's amazing how different an idea can look like after some serious rewriting

I saw Oz: The Great and Powerful today.
On the whole, I liked it. It was a very gorgeous movie, I'll give it that.
My main complaint is the mood whiplash. There's a rather hardcore scene of a woman crying (you'll know it if you see the movie). There's some other really dark bits that I'm not gonna go into, and they hit you like a brick what with the friendly flying monkey and munchkins and all.
I would also have liked the character of Oz better if he spent more time pulling tricks and being useful.
The whole character arc there was that he was more useful than he believed himself to be, and a better person than he gave himself credit for. He runs off a lion with flash powder, and uses some sleight-of-hand for a few other tricks, but he spends the majority of the movie protesting that he's useless and not actually doing anything, thereby being useless in fact. It would have been a bit better, to me, if he was doing stuff all along and just shrugged it off as stuff "anyone could do".
I liked the Hobbit better, despite Oz having its moments.

He jumps like a damned dragoon, and charges into battle fighting rather insane monsters with little more than his bare hands and rather nasty spell effects conjured up solely through knowledge and the local plantlife. He unerringly knows where his goal lies, he breathes underwater and is untroubled by space travel, seems to have no limits to his actual endurance and favors killing his enemies by driving both boots square into their skull. His agility is unmatched, and his strength legendary, able to fling about a turtle shell big enough to contain a man with enough force to barrel down a near endless path of unfortunates.

i call bullshit. they did not even need to blow into the cartridge to get it to work again!

Peculiar properties of spacetime ensure that the perception of the magnitude of Soon is fluid and dependent, not on an individual's time-reference, but on spatial and cultural location. A marketer generally perceives Soon as a finite, known, yet unspeakable time-interval; to a fan, the interval appears greater, and may in fact approach the infinite, becoming Never. Once the interval has passed, however, a certain time-lensing effect seems to occur, and the time-interval becomes vanishingly small. We therefore see the strange result that the same fragment of spacetime may be observed, in quick succession, as Soon, Never, and All Too Quickly.
You shouldn't actually blow into the cartridge, because it damages it though.

i know that you are technically right, but practical experiences over the years still confirm:"if it does not work, blow into the cartridge and it probably works again afterwards"

Your practical experience is based on confirmation bias.Stahlseele wrote:i know that you are technically right, but practical experiences over the years still confirm:"if it does not work, blow into the cartridge and it probably works again afterwards"
If you just took the cartridge out and put it back in without blowing on it, you would obtain identical results.

It's been years since I've messed around with an NES, but I wonder if the trick is actually, taking it out and reinserting it, anything else just doesn't matter.Stahlseele wrote:i know that you are technically right, but practical experiences over the years still confirm:"if it does not work, blow into the cartridge and it probably works again afterwards"
The most efficient way to fix an old NES is to cut the 4 pin on the 10NES lockout chip. Most of the blinking problems are actually caused by failed connections between the 10NES in the system and the one in the cart. Disable the lockout chip and everything will usually work fine.
The only problem is that you can't play the Nintendo World Championship cartridge without a lockout chip because the NWC cart used the chip to activate some of its content. This shouldn't be a problem, because there are only around 100 NWC carts in existence and then sell for well over $10,000.

It's been my experience that the problem usually involves cleaning the contact points in the cartridge. Blowing it out is sort of like using an air can on your computer - it moves enough dust and munge that contact can be improved. I've found that taking a few Q-Tips and rubbing alcohol and cleaning the contacts both in the cartridge and in the game system works better, though.RobbyPants wrote:It's been years since I've messed around with an NES, but I wonder if the trick is actually, taking it out and reinserting it, anything else just doesn't matter.Stahlseele wrote:i know that you are technically right, but practical experiences over the years still confirm:"if it does not work, blow into the cartridge and it probably works again afterwards"
On an amusing note, my son picked up the cartridge blowing trick really fast, but we can't help laughing because he's extended it to all gaming systems - even when they take CDs.

Saw this around a week ago, just before my desert trip. It was pretty cool as an example of how much thought goes into modern marketing for ideas and products, and how the boundary between them is surprisingly fluid. I'm tempted to watch it again.
